| Introduction
Vision: GCRE works towards promoting a society where people do not feel excluded because of their colour, ethnic origin or racial background. They should be able to live, learn and work without fear of racial discrimination to achieve their full potential. In fact it is to promote a community of communities where people’s input is according to their capacity and the award is according to their need. Mission Statement: We work towards having a just & integrated community, where diversity is valued and celebrated in the London Borough of Greenwich. We work in partnership and use both persuasion and powers under the law to give everybody an equal chance to live, learn, work and visit Greenwich, free from fear, discrimination, prejudice and racism. For that to be achieved, we need to work with public bodies and individuals of all backgrounds to make a unified effort to promote a community where people can live at ease with each other and respect each other’s values. Over the past year we have achieved these aims by :
During last year we have initiated two new programmes – One is to address the capacity building needs of Black & Minority Ethnic groups in Greenwich. We have highlighted the weaknesses of BME groups in attracting external funding and the Commission for Racial Equality has provided funds to us to address these issues. The second is to involve young people in sports and use it as a means to promote community cohesion. This is being done to introduce (locally to young people of different backgrounds) an Asian sport – Kabaddi. The Lottery Heritage Fund has supported us for this purpose. Some of our programmes have been followed in other countries as models of best practice and people have come on study visits from Czech Republic, Slovakia, Bulgaria, Romania and Russia to see our operations in practice. The challenges are enormous and the struggle is long. We keep trying to meet those challenges with vigour and commitment in our own small way. But then we do not forget that Rome was not built in a day.
